Environmental challenges in the coking industry

Technological processes taking place in the coking industry have an adverse impact on the environment due to significant emissions of pollutants into the air and water. In accordance with current Polish and EU legal requirements for coking installations, coke plants are required to implement corrective solutions involving the modernization or construction and operation of new coke oven batteries and installations accompanying production.

Compliance with Best Available Techniques

As a result, investment in effective technical solutions serving environmental protection is intended to support compliance with the requirements of Best Available Techniques for the coking industry.

For this reason, BIPROMET S.A. has placed particular emphasis on specialization in the modernization of gas and wastewater treatment installations, as well as the design and implementation of dedusting installations using dry and wet electrostatic precipitators intended for tar removal from gases. The developed dedusting technology has been implemented, among others, in installations for tar removal from gases from tunnel furnaces at the Chemical Works in Blachownia-Kędzierzyn and from coke oven gases at Huta Katowice.

Modernization projects for major coke plants

BIPROMET’s S.A. experience and know-how have enabled the company to participate in major projects involving the modernization of the Coking Plant in Radlin and the modernization of the Częstochowa Nowa Coking Plant. Both projects involved the preparation of technical designs, delivery of equipment and installation components, including bag filters, together with complete installation of the dedusting system on the coke side of the coke oven battery, as well as commissioning with optimization of the installation’s operation and handover for continuous operation.

As a result of the measurements carried out, both plants achieved an average dust concentration in the outlet gas lower than the level originally specified in the investment task.
